Question New guy needs help

Hi, I'm new to the board, today! I have an 86 F150 4x4. It has been a great truck for 8 years. At the moment I have no power to the fuel pump on the frame. I changed the fuel pump and it worked for a few minutes. The pumps in the tanks have been out for years. I just use the one on the frame, and it has been working well for years. I suspect the fuel relay is bad. My mechanic tells me it is on the "left side of the firewall". I don't see it. I'm stumped. It is backed up to the barn right now, 30miles from town. If someone can help me get it running, I won't have to trailer it to town.
Any help for the new guy would be appreciated!
Don

Your right it is a 302. But the problem was intermittent at first. I put on a new fuel pump. When I turned on the key I could hear the pump run for about 1 second. Then, as I'm trying to prime the line (turn the key on/off) the pump would run sometimes and not others. I checked the connections, found a loose one, corrected problem. Thought I had it fixed. Loaded up some lumber to put in my barn, backed in shut it off (was running a little rough). Now no power to the pump when checked with test light. Checked up the line to the fist plug, no power there. Everything else works.

Is the inertia cut off switch the reset button under the dash on the passenger side?
I still would like to know where the fuel pump relay is. The only thing on the firewall on the left(drivers) side is the wiper motor, and a wiring harness that comes out of the firewall.

Yes, that's it.

I would suggest tracing the wires backwards from the pump. That oughtta lead you to the relay.

Hello, your fuel pump relay should be under the hood, on the driver side, rear side of shock tower, mounted on the firewall. It is a common replacement part and it sounds to me like that would be the problem. Inertia switches usually are not that erratic.

Thanks for all the help! The fuel pump relay was bad. I have several service manuals and they all show the relay in a bracket on the firewall. The bracket was removed from this truck before I got it, my relay was at the end of the harness and taped to the big harness. I just couldn't recognize it. So, I went to the store bought one and was able to ID it. It runs good as it ever did. It's not overly blessed with power, but it does what I need it to do. Thanks again for all who offered "to help the new guy"!
