Hi guys, it's come time to buy rear shockers for my 53 f100, but none of my local suspension shops seem to have any listings for a rear shock to suit.
Can anyone please give me a brand and part number which may help.
Also can anyone please tell me how far the rear shock top mounts are from the chassis rails. as i have had to make up a crossmember for mine because when i bought the truck it had none. Any help greatly apreciated.
Scott.
Hey 46 - It may be difficult to answer your question. You want to know what shocks to buy, but don't have a stock rear crossmember? Humm.
I wanted gas lift shocks for towing on my 56, so I bought Gabriel #39114 Hi-Jackers from Pep Boys. They fit fine. I run them with only 25 psi with no load in the truck and up to 100 psi for heavy haulin.
Randy Jack, i've made a new crossmember and placed it where the old one should have been , but i was after a measurement if possible telling me where the top shocker mounting bolts should be, the distance from the outside of the chassis rail to the center of the bolt would do.
The gabriel shocker number will help but i was hoping i could get a part number for some sort of a sports shock, can anyone help??
Scott.
46 - I'll measure my upper pin offset dimension (from outside of the frame) today and get that back to you.
I know the mount pads are angled to be normal to the lower pin and pretty close to the bed floor.
I also know that it is very important to have the upper pin mount hole exactly in-plane over the lower bushing mount to avoid rubbing out the lower rubber bushing.

I could be wrong but that sketch looks diferent than my 54. Is it possible they changed in 56. my stock bottom was a mounting bolt that the shock slides on, as is the top. I would think my 54 and the 53 would be the same. Seaves46, I'll measure mine tonight and post it for ya. between Randy Jack and mine should get ya close.
Mike
Randy jack, thanks for the sketch, very helpfull , but as mt54 points out, it looks like in your sketch that the top of the shock is threaded ?
I had assumed that the shock had eyes on both ends that go on the mounting bolts like the bottom mount.

Seaves46, From the outside of the frame to the centerline of upper mount hole is
8 & 5/8 " And yes both ends of shocks have eyes that slide onto a factory stud that is threaded on both sides, one side to mount to frame there is a shoulder on it and the other has a larger section where the schock goes on then shouldered down where the nut and washer go on to hold the shock in place. hopr this helps..
Mike
Mt54 thanks for the measurement and for confirming that the shocks have eyes on both ends. I have already got the mounting bolts , they were easily bought from a local suspension shop.
Thanks again for your help guys.
Scott.
