It's not a big problem here, but it does go on. It usually is done out in the ever decreasing "boondocks". No, it can never be totally stopped.
Something your question makes me think of is the way all accidents getting mention in the news, usually TV, are called "drag racing" incidents. It ticks me off as it waaay more often than not is just 2 pea-brains weaving in and out of traffic, ricer style, that cause the mayhem. Drag racing is a contest of speed done at a track under controlled circumstances. I have noticed this on the Orlando TV stations and have shot them an E-mail voicing my disapproval more than once.
Anyone else notice this improper description of drag racing in their local media? As a part time drag racer {done at the track ONLY} I think it is lazy journalism that makes all who race properly look bad!
It goes on here in charlotte. Mostly where industrial places are. Like for example if you look on the map, where the gray or light brown area is to show that it is a industrial park. I guess they have it here because people are rarely there at night when they race.
Thats where they raced back in my home town, in the indrustrial zone. There was a good 1 and a half mile in front of some companies buildings. Then all the companies got together and had speed bumps put in.
There was a horrific fatal crash due to street drag racing last night in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. The problem is that there are no "boondocks" anymore within a two hour drive of downtown LA. The public drag strip, Lyons, for those who remember, shut down decades ago due to high land values.
It goes on quite often here in Pittsburgh. I don't mind as long as they do it at night when the young kids are not around. I prefer a drag strip, but sometimes it's fun to go see street races on a saturday night.
Not too sure if they are anymore, but Front and Broad streets in the industrial district of South Philly have been notorious for years. Not quite sure of the truth behind it, but I heard a major Dodge dealer near here frequented these races with a Viper, and got tuned up by a kid in a camaro, then spun and wrecked the Viper. There's still tracks all over the road, I'm sure people still tear up south philly
Out here in Vegas we had a huge problem with it. It is not nearly as bad anymore because out at the las vegas motor speedway on saturday or friday nights you can race any vehicle for $10. It is neat becuase you race on the same strip that the NHRA uses. It is called midnight mayheam. Although the illegal street racing still does go on out here because it is for the thrill of doing something illegal.
It still happens in the Chicago area...........however.........if word gets out or there is a crash...........the Police come down hard , heavy and take no excuses. Car impounded, you go to jail and court and lose your license and walk.
Our drag strip has that too, midnight madness pay 10 bucks and race anything you want. Ever see a super duty beat a ricer? It's great. Course it was turbocharged.....

Oh yeah, a guy out here has a white 4 door dually powerstroke and he runs low to mid 14's. Is is so awsome to watch! He will eat the ricers alive left and right. They just think that it is a slow truck until they get stomped. The thing has close to 1000 ft lbs of torque or more. I can't remeber. I have a car and driver magazine that showed his truck in it and he was burning out the four tires in the back. I don't remember the month of the mag though? I will have to look for it.
Around here, the cops find out where it's going on, visit the place, and hand out reckless driving tickets. That's a dandy when the insurance company finds out. They can't be everywhere at once, but it slows down the problem.
We have a 'redneck' version of it here, if two pickups pull up beside each other at a stop light, its on like donkey kong. There is alot of trucks that go down to these certain stoplights on fridays with their trailers and race.
We got the redneck version up here too. I live in the 2nd most rural county in Ohio and industrial parks are unheard of here. Most of the roads are straight and flat- a ball-haulin' driver's dream. Most of the drag racing here is between a couple of full size 4x4 trucks. A favorite of mine that usually wins is a red 76 F150 on 1 ton running gear, with 44's and 15" of lift, powered by a healthy 460/c6 combo of about 550 hp, oh wait that's my truck- lol. Only lost once to a 2wd ranger w/ 351w.....oh well

Two cars racing against each other isn't much of a problem around here. It's mainly either the Ricers (or wannabee Ricers), or dumbarses on "pocket rockets" acting like idiots. This is in rural north central Indiana...
