I have a 98 expy w/ the 4.6 and 3.55 rear end plus tow package. Is it worth changing the rear end to 3.73 gears for more towing power or is this not feasable. I tow approx 4,000 lb trailer, flat land its OK but hill are a slow process. Any suggestions besides upgrading to a new 5.4 engine. Thanks.
Swapping the 3.73 will definately help you out with getting up to speed quicker. If you don't already have Limited Slip, be sure to swap in one that does. Also, you can put some performance mods on the 4.6, such as exhaust, head work, tuner, etc... and make it do just as well as the 5.4.
Heh 806,
I am assuming you have a 2wd otherwise you will need to swap out the gears in front too. If you do, it may just be easier to by a newer one with different gearing. i am just guessing but to change front and rear ring and pinion it would be about $1500 or so. I could be wrong though.
By headwork, I mean pulling the heads off, and having the ported and polished. Basically taking them to a machine shop and having them work the heads to make more power.
