Since all the rain is done, I had a full tank and the 4x4 hasent been used in a while, I went out on the dirt road that go to the fields. Man were they wet and muddy!! Got a good 1-2 ft of mud in a portion of a field (didnt run over the crops!!) and she went right through it, slingin mud everywhere!! Still cautious with it cause it handles diff when in 4x4 andnot sure what she can fully handle, but it went through stuff i thought I would get stuck in!!! Lots of water /w mud on the road itself and some of it got deep (1 -1 1/2 ft) enough for me but I still went through 'em!! Love this truck and how well it ripppps through that muck soil and all the MUD slingin everywhere!!! MUD MUD MUD MUD MUD !!!!!!!!!! Once I fix my water leek(see my other post 87-96 truck forum, help if ya can!!) Ill go again. Now that Im gettin more confident, gimme some tips from all the more exp people. What to do and how to do it.
FORD= Finest Off Road Durability
welcome to the beautiful addiction of the off-road world!
first most important, learn to have fun!
second be prepared. everything from bringing all the RIGHT extraction tools to a 5 gallon can of extra gas! it is always frustrating to get somewhere fun and have it all ruined b/c you left something at home and it is something very simple.
leanr to know your truck and let your truck get to know you....learn it boundries.
build your truck as you see fit! just cause some guys at skool or work have a 20" lift and running 53's doesn't mean you should start there. you can have LOTS of fun in 31's (i know, i have been there, lol) take it one step at a time.
hummm, i'm using my truck offroad all the time (mostly mud/sand), humm maybe i'll post some pic's , but yeah just have the right tools and have fun. Also you might want to travel with somebody else in case you get stuck. I go to Azusa for most my off roading. humm my truck is completely stock with aftermarket gauges and i rarely get stuck. my advise would be look at the ground color the pass treads. and also if the mud looks like really wet cement. remember not to gun your truck due to tire spin. if you are moving still it's ok to gun the truck but if your at a stop then defiantly do not gun it. You'll sink like a brick in water. Remember to use 4x4 before you need it. I usually use 4 wheel high gear for mud you basically never need low gear unless your being pulled out of the mud or going up a steep incline. Tires are very very useful even just some better then stock ones of the same size. Remember to bring zip ties, duct tape, and a good set of tools. Check out some websites that tell you which tools to bring. You don’t need a huge lift to go off roading but I’m not saying it doesn’t help. If you want some pic’s I’ll post a website and upload them .
A spare set of hubs(and necessary tools) and a wire connector kit with extra wire. These are 2 things that one should never gone wheelin without cause hubs can break without warning and one always seems to be fixing a bared wire or a wire that gets torn of your fuel pump.
It's all about a little common sense(which sounds a little funny when talking about driving vehicles sometimes upwards of $30-40k through mud pits and tearin em up). But hey what's a 4wd for if it ain't fun. Gotta love the mud!!!! The best advice is pairing up though. The chances of two trucks breaking or getting stuck is a lot lower. If you're just out in the feilds behind the barn no big deal you just walk back out but if you're miles from civilization what a bummer gettin stuck or broken down alone.
