A4LD rebuilt....Delayed Reaction

OK, I rebuilt my A4LD installed it. It shifts great but when I put it in Forward or Reverse I do not feel it engage. I have to press on the gas then it will engage and start to go forward. When I let off the gas it disengages.

I rebuilt everything but the Valve body and Pump. The reason I didn't rebuild the pump was because out of the 3 shops I called they said that the pumps rarely goes bad & the biggest reason is because I didn't have the realignment tool. The shops I called wouldn't do it without charging as much or more that the tool cost.

So my question is.... Is there a way to test and see if the pump is working right so I know if I have to take out trans or not.

Also how many Quarts of Trans Fluid does a Dry transmission use.
One book I have says 9.7 quarts. If that is not enough maybe that's my problem.

I betchur low on ATF. The pump rarely goes bad. They can, but they will be real whiny when sitting in neutral. The sides of the gears can get real worn, and the pressure will be low. You'd probably notice the noise before it took out the rest of the trans. If it used to shift right into gear, before the rebuild, I'd bet the pump is OK. I used the hub of the torque converter to align the pump when I took mine apart. Placed the hub in from the backside of the pump, worked fine...
You HAVE to get the thing warm/hot to check the fluid level. It is a real pain because of the dipstick tube length. Try adding fluid 1/2 pt at at time, but if it is engaging the way you say, you should barely see the fluid on the dipstick, and it would drop as the pump refilled the torque converter from the pan.

Well I know I have enough ATF. I didn't quite get a half a quart of ATF before it started to leak from the overflow.

What I mean by engage is... When I move the shifter to Reverse I don't feel the car go into Reverse.

Same thing if I put the shifter into Drive I don't feel the car go into Drive. I feel no difference from Park to Reverse to Neutral to Drive.

But when I step on the gas it will take a sec then go.

I'm going to Re-check the adjust on the bands but I'm not sure if that would cause this.

I wonder about something in the Valve body too.

Mine just did that when I had low fluid....maybe you don't get enough pressure in idle?
Just a question while talking about this topic: I feel mine engage too hard, it's like getting kicked. What's wrong?

Well got it working. I put it in Neutral and pushed the gas to the floor 3 times holding it about 5 sec. each time. Then I let it idle down. I let it idle about a minute. When I put it in gear I felt it engage. Works like it's suppose to now. Must of needed something knocked loose.
