Help! Regulator!

Okay, i need some ???'s answered. my charging system is not working and ive had it! pretty much, does anyone know what the "field relay" for the regulator does? where is the green/red wire (color may be different) from this terminal go to? i have no charging and an all new system, so i started testing wires, and this field relay wire has no charge when running, but i would guess that it should. THANKS!

The lightgreen/red wire comes from the ignition switch. The switch gives this terminal 12 volts, to bring the alternator on or off-line. When the alt is online, it can run down the battery, so the green/red basically turns the system on and off.

The regulator sends out a voltage on the "f" terminal to the alt field windings. This field wire voltage will vary depending on how much output the regulator desires.

The regulator gets it's info from the "A" terminal. It uses this wire to monitor the system voltage, so it can decide how much voltage to put on the field which determines how much the alt puts out.

Be aware also that the factory sometimes put fusible links in the output wire of the alt. So if everything is working, it still may not charge if this is burnt open.

so this wire going to the ignition, should it always have charge as the truck is running? i ask because mine doesnt. also, is that going to the actual key switch for the ignition, or to a relay or something? thanks
