I have just discovered a coolant leak on my 390. I have not been able to crawl under the car yet, but it is dripping off the bottom of the bell housing inspection cover. I had a leaking core plug replaced earlier this year (middle core plug on the driver's side) that was dripping from the same spot. I can see the core plug that leaked before, but I do not see any signs of fresh coolant around it although there are what appear to be old coolant tracks leading to the oil pan flange. My only other thought is a head gasket leak to the outside of the cylinder bore (maybe the water passage at the rear of one of the heads leaking out to the back of the engine). There is no white smoke coming from the exhaust and the car is not overheating (Running about 190 to 200 degrees on these 90 degree days in traffic. In the evening and on cooler days it runs closer to 180 degrees which is the thermostat I have installed.). Is there any other place I should look when I crawl under the car? Thanks.
I had a 3.0 in a Ranger do the same thing for about a year and when the trans went out and I removed the trans and flywheel I could see that one of the rear freeze plugs {core plug} was leaking.
From my quick look the other day, I saw no evidence of leakage from the other core plugs. I did see streaks of dried coolant from the plug that was replaced, but nothing wet. There is definitely coolant dripping off the bottom of the bell housing inspection cover. I will put the front end up on Frdiay and do a more through inspection.
