Code 1443

Once again the ever elusive code 1443 popped up today. Evap emissions control something or other on my 96 Ranger XL 4x4 auto. I know i've had this code in the past, but dang how often is this going to keep popping up? Could it be vacuum related? I haven't actually replaced the egr...should I? I have cleaned it on several occassions. It came up after I hosed my engine down after doing an oil change...could water have gotten in somewhere? Any help?

Check out the Technical Information "sticky" at the top of the page. Scroll down to emissions and click on OBD II codes. there is a list of possible causes.

I think the 1443 code refers to the purge valve, not the EGR. My guess is that you got the wiring wet and set the code. Or maybe a vacuum line got loose from washing the engine. If the engine just started to run bad, its probably a hose. Do you have a vacuum guage? If not, they are cheap and a valuable diagnostic tool. Check the engine vacuum to see what you have. Check all the hoses from the charcoal cannister to the manifold, and check the wiring harness to the purge valve and the thermistor. Clean them with a good electrical cleaner and use a dab of dielectric compund when you reinstall them. If none of that helps, it is probably the purge valve. Keep us posted and good luck.
