Hi,
1981 f 150 inline 6 3 speed manual on th efloor. Just changed rear main Putting trans back on. The clutch (manual) fork goe sinto the bellhouse and attached to throwout bearing. Is this correct? If so, could someone please elaborate on what the Throwout bearing does. I know it goes on the shaft in the trans , but how is it held in place. Also, I do not know what the pressure plate is. The flat side of the throwout goes against th epressure plate , correct? Where is the pressure plate?

Here's how it works...The pressure plate is the big thing that's bolted onto the back of the flywheel with a bunch of 'fingers' sticking out the middle of it. Inside there, between the flywheel and the pressure plate is the clutch disc. The fingers on the pressure plate hold the clutch disc to the flywheel. The throwout bearing releases pressure on the clutch disc and allows the clutch disc and flywheel to disengage so the transmission can be shifted. It is operated by the fork.
You might want to cruise down to your local autoparts store and pick up a Haynes or Chilton manual to get all the details on how to put it back together. Hope it goes well for you
