Fuel Guage gone to "Zero"

My 1996 Ranger with 4cyl engine and manual transmission has had the fuel gauge go out maybe 5 years ago. I have gotten by fine using the odometer. I have never gotten close to running out.

The gauge just reads "zero,"

However, I would like to fix the thing.

How do I access the fuel guage transmitter?

Must I drop the tank? Do I need to remove the bed?

What would you suggest?

Thanks

Pulling the bed is easier.Just remove the bolts on the driver side ,loosen the ones on the passenger side ,unhook the filler neck and tail light wiring, and lift the drivers side up and block it up with a peice of wood block, this will let you get to the sender unit.before you do this, there is a wire connector under the cab that runs to the tank sending unit.sometimes this can get loose or corroded and loose connection, you may want to check it.

I almost forgot, take the three screws out of the filler neck, don't take the clamps off, this is a hose inside a hose vent system and its a pain to get back on.

Chances are once you get there you might be lucky and only need to replace the float. They are a poor design, and somehow they fill up with fuel sending the arm to the bottom of the tank or "E". The float is only like $5-$7 at Ford.

just replaced the pump/sender/float assembly about a month ago on my 96 2.3.
discovered the real problem was just the float - it was full of gas.
but I already had the parts in hand, so I went ahead and replaced the whole thing.
pulling the bed is much easier than dropping the tank.

Cept for the bolts, might need a breaker bar for it.

Float had Sunk !

You're right.

The float was full of gasoline.

I agree. Poor Design.

Raising the truck bed was sorta fun. Six bolts and it made avery dramatic change to the appearance of the truck.

With tax the float was $5.oo.

Works fine now.

After five years without, now I can see my fuel level.

Fuel Gauge

I bet your sensor is damaged. Bent or partially sunk (?) Hanging somehow.

I don't know about the '88 truck.

Look to see if the bed can be unbolted.

The bolts get awfully bad. In an '88, they are likely pretty rusted.

You might want some replacements on hand.

Have a breaker bar ready!
