I hear that it is essential to change out the 02 sensor every once in awhile. Is this true or should a guy just wait till it throws a code? Also, its the one thats upstream of the Cat that should be changed right?
It's rather subjective as to when a change out is needed. If your engine was properly maintained all along, then a 100,000 mile interval would be a reasonable expectation. If you suspect the engine has suffered from neglect then an earlier change would be in order. A failing sensor usually shows up as progressively worsening gas mileage long before it completely fails.
On engines with dual sensors, the forward sensor relays mixture details to the electronic engine control unit, while the rear sensor serves to confirm the efficiency and overall performance of the catalytic convertor. The rear one is just a pass/fail indicator.
Great! thanks alot. I removed the o2 sensor and it was pretty corroded. My 91 aerostar awd has ~150,000miles on it so far and I
believe that its the original ford/bosch sensor. I had been noticing worsening gas mileage over the past couple years as well, so
