Used V10

I saw an F-350 V10 for sale and at first was interested because of the price. When I got around to looking at it, I discovered it had just over 100k on the clock.
Should I avoid this vehicle with this much mileage or is it not much of a concern with a V10?

I look forward to your comments.

Thanks

Welcome to FTE, 127082.

First of all - what year model? Is the body and frame straight? 2WD or 4WD? SRW or DRW? Any other info would help.

V10 engines here have lasted past 200K.

Mileage isn't near as important as the condition and "proof of regular maintentance done" of the truck.

How it got the miles is important. The overall condition of the truck should give some tell tale signs.

If the truck is coated with Armour All, then walk away. Dealers do that to mask problems...

The truck is a 2000 F-350 Lariat, 4X4 single rear wheel. It has a Rancho suspension and lift kit. The body is in good shape with a few scratches and no dents or dings. The only interior work needed is the driver seat which has a rip at one of the seams. Looking around the engine, it seems to be in good order. Clean but not sanitized and I don't see any tell tale drips of any fluids. The tires have some mileage however plenty of good tread. The bed has a sprayed in liner and seems the previous owner didn't do much carrying. I did talk to someone who is a friend of the previous owner and said that the majority of duty for the truck was traveling and pulling an occasional trailer.
No one has detailed the truck as it seems and no armor all anywhere.
The dealer has said they can put me in touch with the owner if need be. I'm thinking that it would be a good idea at least to find out the frequency of service but I can be mislead there too.

Knowing all of this what do you suppose would be a fair price for the vehicle?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I've been thinking about this and have changed my mind several times on a price.

I think I wouldn't be far from the mark if I stated the value at anywhere from $15 to $18K depending on the lift and maintenance record.

Hope this helps.

if your not to set on that perticular truck,do some looking around and you can find some with low miles. i just bought a 00 F250 ext cab 4x4 automatic with 36000 miles for 15,700. this truck still has the stock tires on it granted there starting to dry rot, but for the price i couldnt let it go. the old fella didnt even know how the 4x4 worked..

I got one for ya':
In 1982 a friend of mine saw a truck for sale on the side of a Farm to Market road, got the number off of the 4sale sign and called the owner. It was a '74 short/narrow bed with a 390 manual tranny. It had 7.50 x 16 mud grips on the back and 7.00 x 16 streets on the front. He asked the guy if the 4WD stopped working because of the tire difference. The guy (about 50 yrs old) replied that it was not a 4WD drive and even got mad that my friend kept telling him it was. My friend then decided to let it go - got the truck (with 22K miles on it) for $650. Never been in 4WD - the hubs had to be replaced, but that was it.
How did that happen? Makes you wonder about some people, huh?

I would talk to the owner. Thats always a big plus. When I trade my truck in I always tell the dealer to always have a potential buyer talk to me. I tellem everything I know about the truck. Get a hold of him and quizz him some about the truck. IMO I would look at some with fewer miles. V-10s should be easy to find. With fuel prices everybody is wanting a PSD. You should be able to negotiate with this in mind. Good Luck.
