Have a 59 f100 flat 6, I'm not familiar with the older starters but when I pulled the starter out of this truck it came out with one spring deal connected to the end of a rod. I went to the auto store and they showed me a starter that was very similar but had no long rod or spring at the end of it. Sorry I do not remember the exact naming of these parts I’m describing but I’m sure there is some one out there that can tell me if I can use the newer looking starter with out the rod, spring action on it??
If you have a 59, your engine is a 223 in-line 6, not a flat 6. What you're describing is the bendix assy on the end of the starter. I don't know what parts store you went to, but don't go back there. You need to find a NAPA or CarQuest store. Most likely, they'll have to order it in, but they can get stuff next day. Also, look for a shop manual for your truck, it's very helpful if you're not familiar with the older stuff. You can look on this site in the store area, or on Ebay under "59 Ford".
Its a perfectly good starter and I doubt you need to upgrade it. Take it to an auto electric shop , my shop charged me 30 dollars to rebuild it and it works beautifully... sure beats the $70 I paid before for one off ebay that was toast before I installed.
