I'm attempting to put my steering column back together after replacing a broken shifting collar. My problem is getting the shifting tube re-seated; it partially pulled out when I removed the broken shifting collar. Do I need to remove the entire column from the truck to do this, or is there another way? Of course, there was no need to ask advice BEFORE starting this project, right?
Hey Fred,I just did my 73 F-350 SCS and they are identical to my 72 F-250.I did not have to remove the column but it took me a while to get it lined up just right.Did you remove the neutral safety switch before you started? I did not do this on my 72 and I broke off the tang that is tack welded to the shift tube and had to get another one.Make sure if you broke the tang off not to let it fall down inside the tube seat as it is a real dog to retreive.Sometimes an extra hand will make it easier and take your time.Hope this helps.

It is kindof hard to get the tube seated. There is a notch that you have to get in the right spot and the spring in the there and you have to hold it down because the force of the spring will push it back out. That's about it, o yea mine was out of the truck I don't know if it's harder or easier.
Got it! Thanks for the helpful advice, you guys. I did end up taking the steering column out to work on re-seating the shifting tube, and enlisted the aid of a buddy with the spring thing. Thanks again...
