hey guys.. i got another question for you's. I have an 83 f-100 with a 302. as far as exhaust goes, its just a cherrybomb dumped..it sounds ok but i want something a little more. I want to put headers on high flow cats (NJ sucks) glasspacks and have them exit in front of the rear wheels. I was telling this guy about my soon-to-be-setup, and the guy said that side pipes were illegal in NJ. the guy talks alot of BS but he talked enough to get me scared. i just dont wanna spend $500+ and then have to change it. anyone know if this is true or not?
You really need to put a call into either your DMV/RMV, or a local inspection station. I believe up here in MA, you cannot have your exhaust dumped 2-4" behind your last functional window. Although, I believe some Fords in early 97-98 came with exhaust that dumped before the rear tire.
It is usually illegal ONLY on cars because the Federal law states something to the effect the exhaust has to exit behind the last opening window and door (truck) and passenger compartment on cars.
80s Corvettes came from the factory (at least the Pace car edition) with sidepipes that exited in front of the rear tires, as an example, because it was behind the passenger compartment.
When in doubt, check the MV laws either on-line or in the books at the library. I have done that many times to do mods I wanted.
A good muffler shop "should" know the laws in their area and would normally advice people regarding mods...but then there are the few that don't care and just want your money...they probably think they will get away with charging you twice once to install and again to uninstall according to law regulations
haha, i love your location description (see mine for years has been the same.) i believe so long as you are exiting behind any opening side window you are fine. many factory fords came with that (97-98) and gibson and others sell aftermarket. My brother has dual side exits on his bronco, and only reason they gave him crap was b ecause of the sliding windows on the cap.
If you do it, the idiots at inspection will probably give you trouble, no matter how legal it is, simply because there are a lot of morons there. Amazingly, i have dealt with some decent folks last few visits. what area of jersey you from?
I live in NJ for 15 years before moving to the great state of Texas, which was about 1 month ago. I had a '78 F-150 with a 460, headers and dual exhaust dumping out before the rear wheels. Looked sweet. I knew I would never pass inspection in New Jersey because they have all the laws they could think of then they took every law from every other 49 states and put it in their books. It's not the garbage state, it's prison. Anyways, to get back on topic, I paid 65 bucks to get my truck inspected at a shop, that's your best bet, I could have had no tires and I would have still passed. Good luck, trust me, leaving NJ was one of the best decisions of my life.
i am from williamstown (not sure if it rings a bell).well i am gonna put a big hold on my exhaust dreams...i just got laid off from my summer job and on top of that a week ago i just bought a $450 slug gun, so my funds are 0. so i just digged out my old flowmaster 40 si/do with pipes out the back and welded it up. i was gettin too many headaches with the dumped cherry anyway...
iskybantilus-where do you usually get your inspection? DvlRacer- how does your setup sound?
havnt had to buy one for a while, i'll try to ask around. williamstown huh, right around me, i am renting in voorhees till the end of the month and buying a house in malaga. Usually hanging out in williamstown right there by main street on clayton road. my buddy owns about 10 acres there. Maybe we'll have to get together and hang out sometime. I have had decent luck with ancora as far as inspections go, but havnt brought any of the older rigged up trucks there either, as i used to be from north/central jersey where my folks are at. we could always grab something to eat sometime at geets or something, always cool to meet guys off the forums.
pm or email me and let me know sometime thats good for you. I close on my house at the end of the month, and will be moving in during the following weeks.
Hey Gob, I live in Franklinville. You can dump the exhaust anywhere behind the cab!! Hell it don't even have to exit the side of the truck as long as it is past the cab by atleast 4". Hope that help's!!!!
I have done many trucks like that before, I usually use turn downs behind the mufflers on street trucks, right under the bed.
