I just bought a 67 f-100 360 3spd. runs/drives great. engine has 4,000 miles, but electrical components from previous engine remain. when running for an hour or so, it has problems re-firing. it gets gas, but acts like the starter is cutting out...it eventually starts, but after much cranking. Once it starts, it runs fine till shut off again. this ONLY happens when the engine is hot. Any ideas??? I don't wanna do part swapping till i know the source, everything else in the engine is fine. thanx
My vote would be vapor lock. I had a 240 which has since been replaced with a 360. I had the same problem . I moved the fuel pump from the 240 to the 360 and the problem followed it. I put in a NEW fuel pump and no problem since. All of the normal tests on the old pump were fine. It had no problems except that it didn't work.
Had that prob once too, that steel gas line that runs along the block can get pretty warm. Solved it by sleeving the line with a piece of 1/2" hose slit lengthwise and then slipped over the line from carb to frame. Have since replaced it with stainless braid, which I suspect is better in the heat than the steel line. (And looks better)
If you are running headers on this motor the starter could be getting hot from them Mine does this and then I let it cool off for awhile then it starts right up
ok...so i'm gonna put a heat wrap on the starter, a braid on the steel fuel line.....and while i'm at it, swap the fuel pump just to be safe...then it should be good through the winter. It is having a little problem with starting in the 40 degree morning, suspect fuel pump, i gotta pump the heck outta the gas to get it to fire, then again to get it to stay running. I'll give it a shot and we'll see..thanx guys
I love those high torque mini starters, they are easier to install with the headers and can put up with a lot of abuse. Hi-Torq Mini-Starter + Electric fuel pump = Super fast starts every time.
you may want to check the timing and see if it isnt too far advanced if the previous owner swapped all electric componeents off old motor theyn the dizzy may be worn check the vaccum advance to see if it works and make sure the springs are not stretched way out. oh yeah and have fun with your new truck.
thanx that is.....and i'm gonna have a friend tune it up good, all i know is body work/paint/audio/chassis-springs-shocks-wheels.......i am a novice to the engine work
