#6 wire for the hot leads and #8 for the neutral, but only because it was available. I'm not an electrician, so consult a local professional. The breaker was a new 50 amp dual pole. The Lincoln manual called out for a 30 amp minimum.

I believe it needs to be double 50 amp. I was told that in the past if a welder is run on less, it will heat the transformer and ruin it. Don't know if it is true or not, but I generally run on 50's anyway.
It will trip the breaker but it isnt going to ruin the transformer. Wire size does affect performance some as does the length of the wire. The stick machines will run on number 10 for short distances, 8 is a little better if you run them hard or long but most need a 50A breaker. Everything you have heard about wiring does not neccesarily apply to welder circuits. Input circuits are allowed to be duty cycle rated as per the machine.

That machine needs a a 50A recept but can use a 30A breaker. Look in the manual, it will have breaker size. If the run isnt too long number 10 wire will work with most machines for the small shop. Welding machine wire requirements are different that general type circuits. For the 155 feeder 10 is plenty and if it was mine it would likely be on a 30A breaker unless the manual spec'ed a smaller one. By the way, is it a 155? I have seen 135 and 175's
