4 wheel drive

Have noticed about 4 times now my 4 wheel winds up in high range without my knowledge. Today in a parking lot it went in when I started off. Has anyone else had this happen? 2001 F 350. Thanks, much enjoy the comments on here.

Welcome to FTE, Harleyvette

Are you sure that it is actually going from Low to High or from 4WD to 2WD? It could be just the light or a short in the wiring.

When this happens have you tried to shift the tranny to neutral, depress the brake pedal to see if it shifts back?

Actually going into 4 wheel. Could hear the clunking or scraping when I turned the corner. Stopped, backed up after putting switch back to 2 wheel, all is fine again. Switch actually moves to 4 wheel.

It sounds like it could be the GEM (General Electric Module) going bad.

Maybe FortyFords will chime in and tell you more about it.

You wouldn't happen to have a slight windshield leak, would you?

slight windshield leak, lost me on that one. Had it replaced last summer, never had any water leak into truck that I know of. Small rock star chip in it now. 25000 miles on it, shouldn't wear out that fast.

The reason I asked was that if these GEMs get wet they can fail progressively over time. Water is bad enough on any electronics, but makes this thing act up.

Have you got a Haynes or Chilton's manual? It can tell you how to replace the Gem - IF it's the culprit.
If there's anything else I can't think of it right now.

The solenoid or relays wouldn't cause it, I don't believe.
