I'm looking to buy a 1980 F350 2WD to use possibly for a Truck Pulling truck and as a farm truck. It has a V8 400 with a 4 sp. tranny. It has a nice heavy duty rear end in it that would hold up well to use in a Truck Pull. Do you think it could be any good for a Truck Pull? Let me know what you think. Thanks!
I think I'd choose a 4wd with a 460 or diesel, but you're on the right course with the one-ton chassis. Might want to ask this in the 'offroad' forum, Im sure those guys could give you lots of ideas.
Is there a 2wd class of truck pull? If so you are on the right track. you may want to look at your rear diff. you probably want to have a low ratio to pull with. Also, I am partial to v8's (460) because of the rpm range that they have over a diesel. I have seen gas motors out due diesel in several applications due to the rpm range. Depending on your modifications and upgrades you will wnt to match the drivetrain to the power you are dealing with. I know of a F100 4x4 that had a 427 put in it to compete in mudbog's. unfortunately, the excess power was too much for the stock axles and hubs. Stripped them out in a quick hurry. So make sure the rest of yoru drivetrain can handle the power of you motor and tranny.
Hope this helps.
for truck pulls, rear gear , lower is better, and cubes for torque do too, but nothing says you can't make it do the job. I know that they have 2wd modified classes, so I imagine the have stock classes too, but weight will be against you a bit. If nothing else, give it a run and see how it goes, you never know til you try...
