front seal

i just replaced the timing set on my f350 4x4 (400) replacing the timing cover. is there a trick to replacing the front cover/pan seal and installing the cover without dropping the entire oil pan?

I have done it but the best way I have had luck with is don't put the front seal in until you have the cover bolted on, then install the seal, take a piece of pipe that fits the outer part of the seal, cut it so it will stick out past the crank, and use it as a seal driver, that will allow you more room to slide the cover over the pan rails. but the best is still to drop the pan a little bit by removing the front bolts part way back, and loosening them farther back just enough to allow the pan front edge to drop down about 1/2"

what i do is trim the inside flange that holds the seal. it makes it easier to get the front cover back on without touching the oil pan. do a couple of "dry" practice runs without the gasket or rubber seal in place to get aquainted with the technique and verify that the trimming is sufficient for the cover to go back on. use a dab of silicone in the corners and under the rubber in the slot in the cover. works for me.
