Question Oil Pickup Distance from Pan Bottom

Got the engine pretty well done other than the DUI dizy and Hedman Elite headers, BOTH on backorder:-(

Seemed to me the pick up is a little farther away from the pan bottom then I thought correct. It is the 3/4 unit from Canton on a Melling HV oil pump. Looks ot be about an inch away from the bottom of the pan.

Also had to modify the rearmost oil pan baffles (bent them toward the pan bottom) due to them hitting on the windage tray, as well as slightly modifying the windage tray to clear the ARP main bolt heads (cut-outs). Thought I might have to modify the pan as well but with the dual gaskets and the windage tray moving the pan away a bit the pan clears the bolt heads now.

Was thinking about using Spitfires instead of the Autolites. What do you guys think about that? 50K spark from DUI dizzy might get the most out of them. Nice FAT long duration spark. Any comments?

Thanks guys
George

The pump pickup should be no more than 1/2" from the bottom of the pan, 3/8" is better. You should carefully bend the pickup so it is closer to the bottom of the pan,

I am not a fan of "special" plugs, they can only spark across one point at a time anyway, so what good is the extra ground electrode???

Not sure that the pick-up CAN be bent. Pretty heavy gauge "tube" and not much to it. !/2 to 3/8 you say? Maybe I can extend the screened pick-up section to achieve that kind of gap cause it is nowhere near that right now. Need to put some thought to it. Another thought would be putting 6 quarts in the pan and fill the filter, totaling 6 1/2 qts or so. Any thoughts on that?

By the way, decide to go with Autolite 45's. Got to thinking about path of least resistance and all. Makes sense, THOUGH, if both "grounds" are of equal resistance, current flow can and will jump between them. Especially if the spark is "hot" enough. Have seen it happen in switchgear applications.
