One month ago I bought a 1997 awd Aerostar. Yesterday when cleaning the interior, my neighbor noticed a piece of black electrical tape on the dash display. We pulled it off. We started the engine. The check engine light came on immediately and stays on constantly. I called the used car dealer and they said "it's just a sensor". I've have put almost 1,000 miles on the vehichle with the piece of tape hiding the check engine light. I'm scheduling an appointment again with the repair shop. Does any one have any experience with this problem? Will it hurt to drive the van to the repair shop? My engine is a 4.0 6 cylinder. It seems loud to me even though 3 repair shops have said the noise is common for the awd drive Ford.
The light is telling you something is wrong and there should be a code from the computer to indicate what the problem is. A good garage should beable to pull the code if you are not the mechanical type & do not have a code reader. It may or may not harm the vehicle or impair your safety. it is best to have it checked out. The used car salesman was a rat for hidding the display. i have a 93 Aerostar with 130 K and the only time the light came on was when the oxygen & MAF sensors failed.
My understanding is the "Check Engine Light" means something is malfunctioning in the emissions control system. This could also affect drivability. I heard the EPA required it to say "Check Engine" because if it only said someting like "Check Emissions Equipment" people would ignore it.
