Hi, im not usually in this forum much but, i have been stumped on a issue i am having with a truck at work, im hoping someone here can help me, its a 1989 f-350, 7.3l 4x4 truck, i had it overheat the other day, well i thought it had any way, so i replaced the water pump, (it was seeping so i figured it was time for a new one) so after that job was all done, i refilled it with coolant started it, got all of the air out, and while she was still cold the temp. guage read Hot,(from the second the key was on waiting for the glow plugs to cycle) so i got looking and unplugged a sensor, figuring it was the temp. guage sending unit, sure enough i unplugged it, the engine ligt went off and the guage read cold, the sensor is on the driver side, front of the block, just above the exhaust manifold facing up, its sorta on top of the motor in front of the valve cover, it has just one wire, is this the sending unit and would it be the problem, or should i just toss in a new one and see what happens? thanks for the help,
there are two temp sender units one is right nexted to the exhaust manifold, the other nexted to the thermal stat (closer too). anyways the one for the engine light to come in and say hot hot hot is the bigger one right on the top of the exhaust manifold. I replaced mine with a gauge. now readings are very nice, and i still can use the other sensor.
There are three sending units.
The one on the drivers side by the exhaust manifold is the temp light, one wire.
The one on the drivers side in the block in front of the head is for the stock guage, one wire.
The one by the thermostat housing under the alternator is for the cold start timing advance, fuel heater and fast idle solenoid, two wires.
ok well it seems the guage and engine light are running on the one that dave has listed as the guage sending unit, so i guess ill replace that, and cross my fingers that its the problem.
are you sure? i mean if you take out the wire yes it will read low engine low pressure. but i thought the other one was to bring the engine light on. shrugs, please keep postin, i would like to know if i'm wrong
ok this is what i figured out it turns on the light, and spikes the guage, but according to borg warner, the 89 dosent have this sensor, so i ordered on for a 91, and ill see what happens when i put it in, but it was like 40 bucks, ouch, glad its not my wallet.
Both light and guage should not be on the same sending unit.
The one for the light should be about six inches away on the lower front of the drivers side head, right by the exhaust manifold
The sending unit by the exhaust manifold will both light the warning light and send the temp gauge to full hot. According to the parts books the 89's did not have this. However mine does. Don
