I have a leather wrapped steering wheel on my 1994 f-150 thats starting to get alittle tattered, has anyone ever takin the padded leather cover off one of theses wheels, just curious whats underneath
I have the same problem with the wheel in my '94. I have a bad feeling that a replacement is going to cost a lot through the dealer. I may cut the leather off before I buy a new wheel. At the rate that it's coming apart, I'll need to do something soon.
whsmith jr you know a guy could probably cut the leather off, see if its a decent wheel underneath, if not, put on one of those after market leather covers, you know the one that laces up. I see theres some pretty nice wheelskin covers on the internet, check'em out
I cut mine off. It's the stock wheel underneath. Mine was looking bad, kinda getting sticky. I bought one of those 5 dollar wrap-type wheel covers, and you wind the cable around it a bunch. It looks sexy, and is much easier to install than I thought. There's a trick to it, it's in the instructions, and if you follow them, it's gonna look better than it did. Just cut it off. if nothing else, you'll have the stock wheel under there.
I thought the leather wrapped wheel was stock, when you say stock wheel with no leather cover was that the wheel on a plain jane pickup, I never seen one without the leather on it. umm interesting, is it presentable with nothing at all on it?
Its not the stock wheel. It is a smaller dia, and has grooves for stitching to fit in.
It will be better than worn leather, but you probally won't like it. I got replacement off ebay for $65. Once before on anoyher, truck I went to dealer and got the plain wheel for half of lrather.

My '92 leather wheel got all dried-out and started to peel. I started peeling it off but I noticed the smaller diameter and stopped. I was going to ask Ford how much a new one would cost, but for now I've just put on one of those $5.00 leather wraps available at PepBoys, NAPA, etc. Works fine until I decide if I want to spend the extra $$$$ for a new one.
I tend to palm my wheel when turning and eventually wore a hole in the top of my 1990 steering wheel. I just bought one of those slip on jobs, says "Ford racing" on it though so I turned it the other way so only the plain back shows.

look in my gallery. i have the plain black wheel. it's actually more common than the wrap. you could go to a junk yard and grab a wheel off a lower mileage truck w/less wear and tear.
