new trans help

i just bought a new trans for my truck. well i say new but it was rebuilt 12k ago. its out of a 1995 f 150. so its the m5r2. i have 2 basic questions. first one is that the shift forks are all boogered up and need new ones. what would cause them to go bad so fast, second of all he sandblasted a frame in his garage and there is some sand in it, when i turn the outputshaft it sounds like theres some in the gears. but i cant tell for sure. anyhow if there is what would be the best way to clean it out flush it if you will. thanks guys

Sand will cause alot of wear and could be the cause of the forks going out. As for cleaning it I doubt you would be able to flush out the sand. To me it sounds like a rebuild, you don't know what else is damaged and waiting to go out, this would take care of the sand. Sorry to hear about this.

the trans was already out when the sand got in there. i took some brake parts cleaner and sprayed it down really well to try and get the sand out. sounds a million times better than it did, but im still gonna take it to a trans shop and ask about the shift forks.
