I installed an oil pressure gauge in my 03 today and used the port above the oil filter for the signal. The gauge registers 12 psi at idle and 40 psi going down the road. I would have thought 20 & 60 would be normal. Are the low readings because of the location or is this normal oil pressure for the PSD?
The idle reading is a bit lower than mine, but the running pressure is very close to what I see - I have mine installed in the same location. Your idle reading will be higher during colder weather until the oil temp increases.
What weight of oil are you using? 5-30 will really drop the pressure.
Using Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40. The book calls for 10 psi @ idle and 40-70 @ 3300 rpm. I didn't know if what I have is normal or if it is low because of where I tapped in for the signal. I really expected a higher reading, especially at cruise.
Looks like you're doing ok then with those specs. Personally I would like to see higher pressure too but the only way to get that is to increase the size of the oil pump or run with thicker oil.
I guess I was optimistic when I purchased the gauge (0-100). The actual readings don't even get to the half way mark. A 0-60 psi gauge would be more in line with actual pressure, but 0-80 is the only other alternative from the popular manufacturers.
I have an Autometer Lunar mechanical gauge and it is tapped into the head of my Oil Guard bypass system. I'm getting 30 lbs at idle 60-70 lbs cruising.
