Ok, I bought a 360 from a guy to replace my 390 until I get mine rebuilt after a little accident I had with it..
I have done a search and found the cast numbers but nothing about it saying "special".
The cast number on the block is D4TE which from what I gather is a 361/391HD FT... Now, the interesting thing is that it says "SPECIAL" right under the cast number on the block. I also noticed that instead of it saying 352 on the drivers side front corner of the block and on the rear it says "501" backwords or in a mirror it would say "105". I did measure the stroke on it with the dowel pin trick and it looks to be a 360. The heads are the D2TEAA's which I know are common and very popular.
What I am wondering is what does "special" mean? Is this a gem or is this normal or..??? Thanks.
Yep it's a 361/391FT block, with the distributor hole bushed down to FE specs. For all intents and purposes it's an FE. The block is made of higher strength metal than most FE's, and has additional reinforcement for the main bearings. It is a prime candidate for building a high performance engine. The heads are good too.
It's normal and a gem. Good find. There's only 100 trillion of 'em in the junkyard just north of me.
