here's the dilemma.
Can't decide on pulling the 150,000 mile 351w, and aod tranny, which i replaced my original c-6 with (bad mistake) from my 85 150, and replacing it with a 390 with about 5,000 miles on a 30 over rebuild and a c-6 with same mileage on a rebuild. Or waiting about a year, (due to financial constraints) and rebuilding my 351w and purchasing another c-6 to go along with it.
I realize that there are a few problems to overcome with putting in the 390, but it is what i think to be a heck of a deal. i ran into a guy willing to part with the 390, and c-6 for about $1200. seems to be on the up and up, a mechanical engineering professor of about 35 years .
Any advice or true stories would be greatly appreciated.
I would just rebuild the 351 or buy a long block. You should be able to find a decent long block for less than $1200. By the time you replace everything needed (bracketry, exhaust, engine mounts etc) you'll probably have 2k into it before your done. 2k would build a damn nice 351!
Another thing to consider is that the FE's like their fuel. Spend some time in the FE forum, ask some questions, and learn about what you are considering. I don't thuink there is a economical running FE out there, about like finding a fuel efficient 460. Good motors for the most part, but not cheap to feed. For the extra fuel cost, and initial buying price, I'd go with a 351 rebuilt and/or slightly modified.
