I just got my first Ranger... 95 XLT 4x4 4.0 auto tranny. It runs & looks good & only paid 2500$ for it because it going to need a tranny soon.It slips 3rd gear & revs before going in. I have access to buy a parts truck at an auction, but im not sure what years fit. can anyone help me out. Fred
Is the check engine light on? sometimes a bad Throttle position sensor will cause the trans to sort of go into neutral between shifts, even if the light is not on,it can still have pending codes stored.auto zone will read the codes for free,I would try this first and see what you get.write down any codes you get and list them here.My 95 model did this,I paid $1,800 for it and the guy who sold it thought the trans was going out,but I replaced the $26 sensor and boom, its like a new truck now!this sensor will also cause the injectors not to open so it runs like its at idle, barely getting up to 55mph. Oh yeah,WELCOME TO FTE!
since i cant type very good, i didnt tell all the facts! the fluid was changed & a bottle of lucas tranny treatment added. the pan didnt have any shavings & the filter was changed. It seams to have a weak pump cause it takes about 2-3 seconds the go in gear from rev. to forward & vise versa. I was told by the guy at the salvage yard that 95 & 96 ranger trannys are the only thing that fits. that doesnt leave me with a lot of choices! I cant believe that an exploder (haha) tranny wouldnt fit. Even some thing newer. Im going try to find out what the difference is. I guess they might bolt up, but the wiring & computer probably would be the problem. my other choise is a rebuilt $$$$ !!!
I too suffered the same problem in my '96, and two weeks ago I had the tranny rebuiilt to the tune of $1700. And GUESS WHAT....it still slips occassionally!!! Needless to say, I will be returning to the tranny shop and I won't be polite about it. Go with a used one if you can, but try all other resources first, flush, filter, big hammer, whatever it takes cuz that is way too much money to throw down on an 8 year old truck to get a rebuild job done.
Read the codes. read the codes... READ.......THE........CODES.. If you haven't allready,if you don't get any,no harm done and no money spent.you could find some small problem that is easily fixed. There are 10 sensors in and on the transmission, like the trans range sensor, the 6 trans control sensors, the vehical speed sensor, the turbine shaft sensor, just to name a few.Not to mention the Power Control Modual(pcm) that you can plug a scanner into and set the rpm shift point of EACH gear.
I don't mean to make anybody upset. But Autozone DOES NOT check vehicles under 1996. I drove about 45 minutes to one just to find out they don't have the old OBD 1 scanners that are used on 1995 and lower models. Also, some guys told me they sell them for like 25 bucks at Walmart. Went there to and guess what - NO scanners - they don't sell them anymore. I found some online but I am paying about 35 bucks for them + shipping. I guess it is still cheaper than going to the mechanic cause he'll charge you 60 bucks just for checkin it once. Anyways, I hope this will save you painful driving time because time is definitley worth money!!
well,Matt, My truck is a 95 model and they read my codes so many times the manager threatened to just give me the scanner. You see, it was mid 95 when they changed to the OBD II system. If you look at the tag under the hood by the latch it will tell you. Did the guys at the zone look at your truck or just say they cant do 95 models?the easiest way to tell( other than the obvious sticker) is to look at the OBD connector, right beside the hood release.the obd II system will have a 16 pin connector but only 7 pins are used. Here is a direct quote from my Haynes manual, "The requirements of the first generationsystem, later nicknamed OBD I,are incorporated in 93 and 94 models with EEC IVemission control systems.OBD II,a "second generation" system is incorporated in 95 and later models with EEC V emission control systems."
Getta manual trans dude!! Last 4 ever and U can change clutches & everything yourself! Just a thought, don't take it personal. Probably cheaper than a rebuild even
hey, I have a 94 4.0 v6 4X4 - can I put a manual tranny on my truck???? Please say YES !!! Everybody tells me it's impossible but if it is possible. Please tell me! thanks

HEYY... KOER test found a code P1780, but could only find a short discription.. (transmission control switch curcuit out of self test range.) also with the first code came PCM 16, but I couldnt find any info in the code book on this. no other codes. Any clue what it might mean? Fred
I means the TCS didn't cycle during the self test. You will need to run the pinpoint test unless someone is familar with this code, let me know if you need a copy.
Ohh, almost forgot.. my overdrive button on the gear shift doesnt seem to work. when I press it going 55 my rpm's dont change & the light doesnt on the shifter doesnt lite. Didnt really check it out to much.. any clues? Fred
The O/D light on the dash is an O/D OFF light.when its on the o/d is off,it may not turn off after a certian speed to prevent damage. try pushing the button while your stopped and see if the light comes on.if it does, get up to 45 or so and push it and see if it shifts into o/d. I'll see what I can find on the codes, but do the pinpoint test that Ken is talking about.
