This actually doesn't have anything to do with my bronco, but a Ford Crown Vic. Just wondering how you go about cleaning an O2 sensor?? I was told to use a propane torch to burn the crud off, but I've tried that before and i'm not so sure it works. (just seems to turn white - like its burnt) Any other suggestions. Don't want to replace sensors, are only 2 years old, but car burns oil and is fouling the sensors. Any tips / advice is welcome. Thanks guys.
check the rubber valve seals inside the valve cover to see if they have dried and cracked and are allowing oil to go into the cylinder and burn up. Cleaning the sensor by using a torch is the only way. I would try and solve the burning oil problem first.
I agree with Artistic. Fix your oil burning problem. Another thing, I do not suggest trying to clean the O2 sensor, I hate to say this but, you run the risk of ruining the sensor. Fix your oil burning then replace the sensors, your ecm will be much happier with you.
Sorry, I wasn't really clear about the problem. Rings and valves are shot. There is major blow by in 2 cylinders, but its my sisters car and she got it for free, (everything is in mint condition except for those 2 cylinders) so I can't/won't fix the oil burning. Just wanted to clean up O2 sensors to get a little bit more like out of the car. Thanks guys.
Heck, I am 22 and when my mustang blew a ring out and trashed the #1 cylinder I had it ripped down while still in the engine compartment re-honed the cylinder wall and rebuilt the motor all while it was still in the engine compartment. On top of it, it was a 2.3L 140 c.i. 4-cyl. gotta be on tdc or you're scr**ed...I did this in a long weekend, sat/sun 6 a.m.-9 p.m.. That oil burning problem can't be too bad especially when o2 sensors run $70 bucks a pop and the car was free. jump in and get some grease up to your elbows About o2 sensors, they can be cleaned but use mapp gas in a blow torch and burn the impurities out of it...this is waht it does anyway when it is in the exhaust manifold which gets to 1500-1800 degrees...It probably has a platinum tip and ceramic. That should work...Note: do not use any solvents and soak it that will in fact ruin the sensor. Or you could (depending on the make and year) get the sensor plug that over-rides and simulates an 02 sensors signals so you do not have to worry about it anymore...It would be simulated. Just a thought
