4.6 charging problem
We have an 2000 expedition with a 4.6 about 8 months ago the battery went dead after driving about 5 miles since the battery was about 4 yrs old i replaced it with a new one and every thing was ok 3 months later same thing.I took the battery for a check and was ok however not wanting to take chances i replaced it as well as the alternator with a new not rebuilt one.I checked all the wiring as well as fuseable links all looks clean and good. about 3-4 months no problem and this week same thing it will kill the battery in less than 5 miles if it sits a while it will crank slowly and start add will charge ok this is an intermittant problem that comes and goes any advice will be appreciated...........Marc

A problem so intermittent will be difficult for anyone to diagnose. It could be a charging system problem, cabling problem, ignition switch problem or other draw on the system, water contamaination from a windshield leak getting into the fusebox and causing accessories to stay on after you exit the vehicle, or crap components.

Thanks homer it is so infrequent when it happens it is hard to diagnose ive heard that theres a diode in the alternator or inline wiring that will stop the alternator from charging this happens when it senses resistance ive yet to see any corrosion or leaks the terminals have been cleaned spotless any other info will be appreciated...........
