That makes sense about the balancer being off. Does anyone think it would be a problem to drive it on a 600 mile round trip like this? It runs fine. I will have to check to see if it is really the balancer. Thanks for the responses.
I would try it on a twenty mile trip first. Did it ping under excelleration? No?Then check plug color. Timing does not need to be perfect, but pinging is your guide. Good luck, John
I will try to use proper full sentences... I have heard of dampers slipping /rotating. If thats the case, you will have to r/r it. If it did this, that means that the rubber insert is loose. BUT, what are you calling # 1 plug? it`s the VERY FRONT! Also check and see if the damper is true. In other words, is it flat? not out/in on top or bottom? the outer ring I`m talking about. This damper is fairly easy r/r. I`ve dealt with several 4.9`s. It`s very rare for the damper to spin, but it`s possible. And it has happened!!! Go for the simple fix first. Well, I may be old school, but as you said it runs great, WELL..........maybe don`t try to fix it if it aint broke? And, test your light out on another vehicle.....????? guys, this guy is seeing dollar signs......this probably is a cheap/quick fix. Todd
The harmonic balancer went out all of a sudden on my 300....what a God-awful noise!
I had no idea what it was. That was the first shock. The second shock was what the dealer wanted for a new one....it was like $110, and that was maybe ten years ago.
I know there are aftermarket ones, but they're not much less cost, and I think I trust an OEM part more for this kind of rigorous use.
I would not drive it 600 miles not knowing where it is on base timing. More 300 sixes
ended up with broken pistons and worse from incorrect timing than anything else.
Detonation plays h with any engine but these seem to suffer more.
You are using the wrong timing mark on the harmonic balancer. Use the small hard to see thin line, not the bigger eaisy to see one. I just went through all of this crap myself.
what does it sound like when the hermonic balancer goes out? learn something knew every day I always set my old mucle cars by vacume and the i 6 is bullet proof
clockwise (advance) run good? no ping? shut off. restart start ok? tromp it slightly, ping? (while in gear) if ping turn counterclockwise slightly, try again.
I think you got that backwards... the distributor in the 300 rotates the opposite way from a v8, because of the gear drive.
And also, i just set mine by ear and feedback from driving - keep it from pinging, surging, etc.
