Predator/Gauges Install report
Not having any patience, I tried the tuner before getting the gauges installed. I first tried the High Altitude tune (40hp) as I live about 4800 ft elevation. My test run raised my speed from about 68 to 74. I then tried the 60hp tune with the shifts set to Frim. This test run was right at 80. Very noticeable difference between the two tunes. I ran the 60hp tune for about a week, using max throttle sparingly as I did not know what the EGTs were doing. The fuel economy indicated on the computer was wayyy above normal. Typical economy indicated would have been about 14.8 with actual around 15.8. With the tune installed, indicated was 19.2 but alas, actual was only 17.1. I'm looking forward to some pure hiway driving to see what I get.
After getting the gauges installed, I was able to determine that the 60hp tune put the EGTs (pre turbo) right at the bottem end of the red and boost is reading about 18 ( which I assume is actually about 32 when you add in the 14.7 lbs of atmospheric pressure) - I seem to recall stock boost is limited to about 26lbs total so my gauge would read about 12 stock. I haven't tried the stock program again yet to verify that :-).
As I am leaving on a 4k mile trip towing the trailer tomorrow, I removed the 60hp tune and put in the 40hp towing tune. EGTs are slightly lower (maybe 50deg) and the boost appears to be the same. I was surprised to learn that I could not firm up the shift on the tow setting - that seems a logical place to be able to do that. Economy indicated on the tow tune is less, but there is no telling how far the computer is off.
So far, I am very pleased with both the Predator and the gauges. The gauge install cost me 3 hrs labor ($56.hr) - I just didn't have the time to do it myself and didn't really want to drill/tap the exhaust manifold for the pre turbo pyro install. The gauges look really great, IMO
I'll have plenty of time over the next two weeks and 4k miles to play with the tuner and see what gives the best economy when towing.
