Transmission OD light Flashing

I have a 1996 Exd body 4.0, 2WD auto Aerostar, 68K miles. This is my third Aerostar, after a three hour trip I noticed the Electric OD switch light flashing and the trans seemed to be shifting hard between gears. Went home, let the van set, drove it again, no problem. runs OK when driven locally, conserned about taking it on another trip. I have a code reader and it did not indicate any error codes.
When I bought this vehicle I did my usual go through, oil change, trans oil and filter, plugs, air filter, fuel filter, brakes etc. nothing unusal.
The check enginge light came once and I replaced the O2 senser, no problem since.
Any suggestions on the OD light flashing? Thanks
