I am building a shorbox 83 f100 for a project. I built one in the past and used a roller 5.0 with a borg warner WC T-5 transmission. That motor was probably only pushing out around 280-300 HP. The transmission worked great in that truck, the only problem was that the shifter for the tranny was too far back. The shifter was right up against the bench seat.
I am in the process of building another one and I want a standard transmission with a bench seat. The motor I have now is about 350-375 HP 5.0 plus another 100 HP shot of nitrous. I kinda wanted to shy away from another T-5 due to the shifter location. Does anyone know if a ZF 5 speed would hold up with that much HP. Is there another type of tranny that would work...
The ZF was used behind big blocks and diesels and should hold up to the HP I would think. The ZF is also a large heavy transmission and it's gearing is suited to a heavy truck used for towing. The first gear is a granny and fifth is OD. It sounds like you are building a truck more for street racing than pulling heavy loads at low speed. Maybe a 'toploader' 4speed would be a better transmission for your truck?
