To make a long story short, I just finished putting 2 different muffler types on the Bronco......together. It has the stock single exhaust with 2.5" pipe. These mufflers were left over from a Jeep exhaust project, so I installed them both on the Bronco. One is an IMCO single chamber (Flowmaster clone), and the other is a Moroso Spiral Flow. (Both are race mufflers; very low restriction). I installed the IMCO directly in front of the Moroso, with pipe exiting behind the rear wheel.
Either muffler was a bit too loud for my taste, by themselves. Together they sound awesome, sort of like a Flowmaster on steroids but with a deeper tone and a slight burble upon decelleration. Haven't had it at highway speeds yet, hoping it won't be too loud at cruise; just enough to make RicerBoy run home crying to his momma.
Since both these mufflers are straight through designs, it feels like they have less restriction together, than the single turbo muffler they replaced.....
351M, that turbo/pack actually didn't turn out too bad. I did drill extra holes in the baffles to relieve the backpressure, and it worked. The holes also made it louder, which I expected. I tested it along with the IMCO/Moroso combo, and the sound level was about the same. However, the IMCO/Moroso seemed to me to have a better 'tone', so that's what I went with.
I still may try the turbopack on the Jeep, just out of curiosity. (It now has a "RedHot" installed, which sounds pretty good.) Right now I'm getting tired of spending so much time on a creeper underneath the trucks, so I may go on to another project other than exhaust system work.......
Johndo, as far as I know there's no way to regulate muffler types except by sound level (at least around my area). It's up to the individual Police officer that stops you as to whether it's legal or not. If he/she thinks it's too loud, they'll give you a VANO ticket (Violation of Anti-Noise Ordinance). I personally think that's kind of arbitrary, but that's the way it is around here.
That being said, I don't think you could get away with running a single chamber on the street by itself. They're intended to be race mufflers and are simply too loud. But, you could do like I did and add another type behind it as a resonator. A small glasspack should work; the single chambers are very short, so there's plenty of room. That setup should give an awesome sound, and still be very low restriction.
Update: I took a longer test drive today, and the IMCO/Moroso quietens down at cruise speeds. That's what I was hoping for. It has a unique tone upon accelleration, almost like a Flowmaster, and then sounds about like the Turbo that I removed. I took it up a nearby hill as a test, and it accellerates a lot better than the turbo muffler did. That tells me the flow is much improved.....
