I have a 95 Aerostar with the 3.0 that has 104,000 miles on it. Is there a product that you can add to the oil that would flush out any build ups or deposits? I have had several people tell me that the best thing to do is add a quart of tranny fluid to the oil crankcase, drive the van for a week, and then change out the oil. Is this ok, or just plain crazy? If anyone has any ideas or can recommend a suitable product, I would greatly appreciate it.
i've heard a couple things from the motor heads i know (god love them) they too said the antifreeze thing would work,it strips of build up slowly (they say) problem is if it has never been cleaned you may dislodge a ton of stuff and clog up your oil pump, especially on high mileage motors. one guy said the stuff on the market does the job but builds up sludge in the pan, because it may dislodge chunks...not too sure about that.
several recommended dropping the pan after running an engine flush treatment...?bottom line seems to be its a gamble. my 91 has 173 thousand on it and i've run engine cleaner through it twice.. no problems yet. i did not drop the pan as advised.. good luck
I think your best bet would simply do a series of frequent oil changes with the filter being changed every time. Even at 500-1000 mile intervals will help the engine clean itself internally, as modern motor oils have a good detergent package. Substituting a quart of Rislone engine treatment is good too. Lastly, short trips, in cold weather are what really cause engine deposits, so anytime you can do some extended freeway driving, getting the fluids good and hot, as much as possible, is important.
