I have a 1995 F150 with the 4.9l inline 6. I had the old exhaust chopped off after the 2nd cat and a flowpro muffler put in,then y'd into 2 1/2" pipe straight out the back with 18x3 chrome tips, it sounds great til I get on it, then I can hear a metal rattling sound from under the truck. Anybody know what it is, or how to fix it? Didn't happen b4 this exhaust, everything looks like its in place and set up right
Yeah, does your truck have air tubes welded into the pipes still? if it does does it backfire out the exaust bad on decel? That was how I found out that the guts in one of the superturbos got blown apart on the ol' 460.
No clamps on the system at all, I completely welded it, as for the air tubes no, its a 95 and I don't see any tubes. Its a stick so when i come to a stop light or sign i downshift and it ups the revs and u get the classic open exhaust with a stick, the whole rumble/gurgle til it drops revs. No real backfiring tho. The only time I hear the rattle at all is when I GET UP on it, if I am cruising or sitting at idle no rattle, when I rev it no real rattle, but when I stomp it while driving it rattles like crazy.
Do you lots of clearance around pipes? When you get on it and the motor torques one of your pipes may come in contact with frame or other parts. Just a suggestion.
You beat me to that one lancer, I have that problem on one of the diesels, when the frame flexes abit (ie:dropping one wheel in a hole or on a hard left) the muffler hits either the frame or the steady bearing mount and rattles.
Y'know I was just thinking about this and our van has a rattle that is seemingly untracable witrh the beat the crap out of it method, but with a stethascope I found out that it was the converter, so if youre's are in still I'd be suspecting them. They usually only rattle at idle but anything is possible.
hey wickymustang, i know this is an old post but i was looking at it last night because i had the same exact sound you do. and it only happened when i was pulling out or backing up from a stopped position. i just figured out what it was today and just got done fixing that annoying sound. i thought the sound was coming from the rear but i was wrong. its coming from just past the exhaust manifold and its under the cab. theres a cover thats in two pieces being held together by two bolts. one of the bolts was completely rusted out and it was allowing that cover to move which caused the gurgling/rattling sound. i just put a new bolt and nut on it and the sound is completely gone. hope this helps (btw my truck is a '95 4.9 also)
