Heres the deal. I have an 88 f-150 w/ the inline 6, 2wd,manual. The truck has been running fine until 2 days ago when it would not start, so i removed the starter had it tested it was bad as i had figured. Bought a new starter had it tested before i left the store works like a charm.Installed the new starter ,hooked up the ground and + , nothing???????? .So i bought a new ground because the old was loose and corroded, still nothing. Next a new solinoid, has to be it right? nope not it. so im thinking a bad positve feed mabey,im looking 4 as many suggestions to what might be the problem
Before you go and get a new solinoid or replace anything else, I'd get a voltmeter and see if you're getting anything to the starter, then you can systematically rule out what it can or cannot be.
I have an 87 it had the same problem the new starter was bad. did you see them test the starter, old and new? Did you get a rebuilt starter? Mine was a rebuilt. I like to test parts at two places to see if they get the same readings.
a bad starter will kill a battery. check all connections-use a volt meter to see where the juice is and where it is not. some auto parts stores can do a thorough test of your batt. for free. that is a good price.
I'd take a voltmeter to all of the connections, including the ground. If your ground is bad, then all that extra juice is just going to fry your starter. If you have power, and the ground is fine, then it's something with the starter. If no power, the cable/battery, etc. Just keep taking the meter to things until you figure it out.
Test a new starter with jumper cables before installing it. Test an old starter with jumper cables before replacing it. Learn to test everything before you replace it.
Thanks 4 all the help guys, I got it working. I had let my friend jimmy put it in because I was replacing a brake line at the time also. He did not tighten down the positve lead all the way , an easy fix thankfully. Thanks again all
