Yes Jon42, that sounds like what my van has started to do. The slight hesitation from the transmission to decide what it wants to do, as I accelerate round corners, or in my example before, the train tracks near my home I cross often (slow to check for trains and coast on thru and accelerate with the slight hesitation). All this after new fluid
Sorry to bother you. I have just had a similar situation with my van (no pun intended!) You can read about it in my post (in the main Aerostar thread). In my case, it happened after the transmission was overhauled. The problem seems to have gone after I added some extra oil; just as it was your experience. But you have had more time to confirm the outcome. How is it doing lately? Has the slipping in first gear reappeared, or it was cured for good?
My hopes are high, but don’t mind bringing them down…
Myvan, did you install new O-rings when you changed filters? If I remember correctly, there are 2 on the A4LD.
If one of these O-rings is broken or missing, the transmission pump could be sucking air when in an unusual attitude (inclined or going around corners). The foamed ATF would then allow it to slip.....
The most important thing I can tell you about these trannys the A4LD is that there are 3 adjustes along side the drives side of the transmition each of these adjusters are to be kept at 120in lbs of torq to keep the tranny shifting properly. some say to check them every time you change the tranny filter.. every 20 -30k miles.. all you have to do is remove the temtion screw(the shop manual states that this nut should be replacesd every time its loosened) then tighten the shaft to 120 inch lbs. see if that helps.
Hi. Its been a while since I checked back here. Too much going on! But as far as the slipping goes, I have forgotten about it actually!! It went away, I guess after adding a bit extra fluid beyond the full line on the hatched area of the dipstick. I haven't noticed it slip all winter now. And yes to thelonerangerxlt question, I did install brand new O rings, and very carefully too, put a little oil on the sharp metal holes where you roll the rings over, so they didn't get nicked at all.
