I heard about that can of stuff you pour in your motor called Engine Restore. Anybody heard of it? It claims it reduces oil consumption and restores compression becuase it claims to seal scratches in cylinder walls. Anybody know anything about this and if its good to use?
I've tried it on a Buick one time, and found out it has tiny copper an other type of metals in it. It didn't last long, before the oil pump screen got clogged an got into the lifter rods, stopped them up to leading to tappet sounds an an engine with a rod through the top of the valve cover....the engine was very worned when I got the car, but it didn't last long. Now I use Slick 50 in everything...it helps from wearing the engine out before its time to rebuild....
I poured in Lucas Oil Stabilizer instead. I could see what Lucas looks like and I've used it in big rig transmissions before with good results. I think it is actually helping with the oil burning problem. We'll see how long it takes to be low 1 quart...usually about a week and a half per quart.
Some swear by additives, others like myself won't touch them or use them on our worst enemy's engines.
Look around the net and you will find many pros and cons on them. I am a firm believer they mostly do more harm than good. When I raced, had a friend that tried slick 50 in a race engine using a "non-by-pass" oil filter and it clogged so bad that oil pressure went to zero. Tore the filter apart and found the slick 50 gunked it closed. After that, when I changed the oil in friend's cars that used it, I always cut the filter apart and found the same situation but they didn't notice since normal filters have a bypass for safely to keep oil flowing. In other words, the filter stops filtering and you are just circulating bad oil with much of this stuff. A lot depends on what size filters you are using etc.
Other articles around show that if they are "sealing scratches" in cyclinder walls, then they are also sealing the walls of oil ports in cams, journal bearings thus letting less oil in places where it IS needed.
The additives in these are mostly 50 weight oil and then various compounds that are mostly useless or are already used in "normal" oil.
As I said, you will find equal stores both for and against but after seeing and reading the anti side, I won't touch them.

Restore is a light carrier fluid employing small particles of lead and copper. It has been know to clog an engines oil passages leaving the engine to starve for oil. I wouldn't suggest it unless the motor is on its last leg.If you have an engine that is using oil and not leaking it, you may want to try a CH-4 or CI-4 rated oil better known as Rotella T or Delo 400 or even Mystic in a 15w-40. All have shown some improvement in slowing the oil burn.
Slick 50 uses Teflon as a burnishing agent to plate the motor. Teflon is not designed for this application and the manufacturer of Teflon, DuPont, does not endorse or recommend the useage of Teflon in any engine application. Slick 50 has a record of building up on oil passages especially at corners and closing off the passage. I would suggest that you not use it. With todays SL rated oils, even El Cheapo Walmart oil is better than the best oils of just 5 years ago. There is no longer the need for any additives as the basestocks have drastically improved.
i used it in my 85 s10 blazer with a out amillon miles . i seemes to increase acelartion but long termed caused my oil pump to clog . I have just used stp smoke treatment at oil change and it does work for me
my rebuilt 302 has 15,000 on it and I use mobil 1 snthyinc and a moble 1 filter I change the oil every 5000 miles with it not because it is dirty and it do not break down like convincal oils I just do it It does cost me anout 40 bucks to do the change my self
if i had the money or a new engine i would run mobil one. I have seen the results we tore down a mazda 2.0 liter after 600,000 miles not becuase the motor was bad but i broke 2 head bolts and the clynders had hardly any wear and barely had eyebrows.
