hawkdg,
This question has come up quite a few times. The folks that have done it almost always say that they recommend starting with a 4X4 frame and not trying to convert a 2 wd frame. You could try searching for some of these posts for more info as well as names. I have both a two wheel drive and a 4 wheel drive, and there are a lot of cross member differences, not to mention the whole spring shackle differences.
I used to hop around to all these car shows and would see a custom Ford truck that was converted from 2wd to 4wd with a massive lift and the biggest mod was the "gullwing" doors. Anyway, turns out the guy lives in the same town as me. I talked to him about the conversion and he's the one that informed me that the frames are different from 2wd to 4wd. He also told me that he was younger back then and he wouldn't do it again. It was way too much work and recommended finding a truck as close to what you're looking for to start. I dropped the idea of converting my 67. It took a few years of looking for my 4wd F250. I spent a bit more money than I planned for an old truck, but it was worth the search and wait. It all depends on what your goals are for your truck. Remember to be realistic about the project and costs.
