I have a 73 swb F100. I went from a 390 and 4 speed to a 460 and c6. Heres what I did. I slid the yoke up in the tranny as far as it would go, then back out about 1/2 and inch. Then measured from the tranny yoke to the 3rd member yoke. Then I simply went down to the wrecking yard and went through a pile of drive shafts til I found the correct length, installed new U joints and bolted it in. Drive shaft was 20 bucks at the wreckers.
I got a wrecking yard one off an extended cab and had it cut down to size at a local machine shop. They scored the shaft and cap of the non-weight balanced end of the shaft, lathed off the cap, cut it down and welded the cap back on lining up the score again. I think I paid $20 for the shaft and $40 for the machining. No balance problems whatsoever and they say they’ve done it lots like that without the need to re-balance the shaft.
mine has a 302 w/ c4,before i bault it it had a 429 w/ c6,they cut the original driveshaft down ,and now its three inches short, for the u-joints,i did take the measurements for it and it was 61 3/8 inches mid way through the u-joints,so i did go down to the junk yard and found one,but the u-joints are different,i did go down to albertlea(mn)and got one off a 71 stepside, but its bent, and the cheapist place i found to retube it was like $200,so i know there has to be someone that sells new drive shafts cheaper then $200 ,sorry about the long post
