Hi guys! I have a 87 f150 4.9 reg gas . My external fuel pump just started making a load winning noise that doesn't go away. When i start the truck it takes an extra few secs to start and it sputtered about five times today while driving. How can i tell if its that pump or the one in the tank? Do i have to do a fuel pressure test between the two pumps? thanks mike
I think I'll disconnect the fuel line between the fuel filter and engine and turn the key for ten sec's to see if i get 1/3 of a cup of fuel. I found this in my Haines manual. I replaced fuel filter last month, i think it was a Fram. i will change it to a better brand. Does a bad fuel filter make the pump work hard and makes noise??? Thanks any other ideas?
If you start hearing a loud whine from the pump it's probably on it's way. Do the test. You can defn hear an in tank pump go bad, one of mine is getting louder and acting up.
Thanks guys!!
Fordpef300 Are the intank fuel pumps about the same between 87 and a 93? I may of been misinformed by my ford dealer when he said i would not hear an intank fuel pump go bad. Does you tank still work? Can you hear it from inside the truck ? What does it sound like?
Beast12 i love your saying!! Smile .... it confuses people
The earlier trucks that used a high pressure pump was fords transitional period from carb to EFI. Still having pumps suited for carbs they were still used and the final pump boosted the fuel pressure up to the EFI's needs. Once the old style pumps were phased out, single in tank high pressure pumps were used, so no, the pumps are not the same. As for mine i can hear a whine from my front pump which i do not hear when i switch to the rear pump. It still works, sometimes they die quick, sometimes they live on whining away for a while.
