I have the opportunity to purchase a 96 Explorer Limited 4x4 with 86k miles for $16,000. Does anyone know if this is a good price or not? The truck is in perfect condition and is loaded to include leather. Thanks for any input.
I got a 96 EB AWD V8 last year for $1600 under book value. The vehicle 'Looked Great' and had only 32K miles on it.
Lo and behold, I wound up having to replace the left lower balljoint within 2 mos, and subsequently the tires because one got worn down to the belts on the inner edge. I wish I had taken a lot closer look before the purchase, but was saved by the extended warranty ($50 Ded).
That vehicle has alot of miles on it (hopefully well maintained highway miles), so I'd look very hard before signing on the dotted line, and possibly have it professionally inspected by a trustworthy mechanic . It may also be wise to get an extended warranty so you won't fall into the same circumstance I did.

This may not be what you wanted to hear but I just got the 97 Explorer XLT with 45k miles for 16 grand.....
I picked up my 2000 explorer xlt with the 5.0L for a little over 12 grand. It had 60k on the odometer. That seems a bit high for a 96, I'd do some nagotiating, or some more shopping. My 2000 blue booked for about 15g
I think location and season have a lot to do with the price. My first thought was that $16K seems high.
My two cents, though: I bought a '97 Eddie Bauer V8 AWD w/104,000 miles a year ago for $6500 in NE Ohio. I ended up putting about $3000 more into it for tires, front end parts, and other misc. items to get it into decent shape.
BTW, this group helped immensely with diagnosing some problems and helping me fix them myself, THANKS!
Good luck with yours!
I bought a 2001 LTD Explorer last year with only 28K for around 20K with the Ford ESP service warranty...
In fact, this past Spring I was wanting to sell my Explorer with only 32K miles, transferable warranty and in A++ condition for $17K....still might sell it, might even arrange delivery??!!....I want a 2001 Supercrew FX4....but time will tell...
The past posts suggest www.kbb.com and www.edmunds.com. I would also hunt around on www.autotrader.com. I used to go to www.ebay.com to learn about options and whats offered in the different years. One thing to keep in mind the UN105 (94'-01' Explorers) had the old body style and the UN152 (02'-current Explorers) are the new body style.....Buying a newer Explorer might yeild a higher 'wanted' value....ALSO, Fall is not a time to buy a 4x4 of any kind, due to demand (kinda like buying a 5th wheel in the Spring).
BTW, a Limited Explorer has all the bells and whistles. The Eddie Bauer has most if not all of the options a LTD has including leather and a 5.0 V8, AWD..
