Truck dies

Several times over the last week my truck has died or refused to fire up.

Initially the problem was when cranking over the motor ( this part worked fine ) the engine would not fire. I tried the front tank and the back tank but to no avail, I noticed if I did on - off - on - off - on - off - on listening to the fuel pump run for a second each time then it usually fired right up and ran great .

Then it died on the highway in a work zone with single lane traffic . As I was coasting with with the dead engine still spinning (manual tranny) I turned the key off then on again and it started running and I drove home no problem.

When cranking the motor ( and not firing )I noticed that the tach registers 400 rpm. When the thing cuts out when running the tach goes to zero and the check engine light comes on ( the engine is being turned by the road wheels).

It is doing both things ( not starting and dying whilst running ( both in overrun and with foot on the gas )) with more frequency. It seemed to do the No Starting Bulls4it ( NSB) when the engine was hot and truck parking in hot sun after driving 30km. It always starts cold
The truck runs great and has good (!!!) power ie the same as usual.

I am not sure the 2 things are related or not. The rear fuel pump makes a different sound than it used to. The usual sound is a monotone pump wizz type noise, now it has a two tone speed change to it. I am using the front tank only for a few days to see if the problem reoccurs. I also changed the frame mounted fuel filter this morning.

I am going for a drive to see if it is fixed or not.

I think I have tracked the problem down to the 60 pin connector to the ecu, the one under the left hood support with the bolt holding the connector in place.

OK so it still dies occasionally, but the non starting thing has not happened since I checked the 60pin connector.

I pulled the codes and got 522 ( not in neutral - it is really- do I need to fix the neutral sw) and 211 ( PIP circuit fault ) in the stored codes. I guess this is my problem.

Can anyone suggest testing procedure or offer other help please

Thanks

Alot of times the selector switch will get messed up, try by passing it and see what happens. Good luck

Quick update

Truck has been running fine now for 1600km. I found the distributor cap was loose (duh) and checked lots of under hood electrical connections. Also refilled with gas a couple of times.

In other words I dont know what fixed it

As it turns out it was the pip sensor in the distributor. The truck kept dying thru October and then last Thrsday I could not get it started 3 times during the day then it would start 30 mins later.
I went to a wreckers and got a dist and swapped then and the difference was like night and day, better idle and pickup and no dying. phew
