Transmission swap

I have a 1969 F-100 fullsize pickup, it has a 3-in the tree in it and I'm looking to put a 4-speed out of a 80's truck. I need to know the wheel base so I know if I can use the driveshaft out of the 80's truck or have to have one made.

Thanks,
Brandon Webster

My guess is that it should be for the most part a easy job, if you have a 302 in the truck. I dont think trannies fit 302 and 360/390. I use to have a 4 speed in my 70 but now use an AOD. As far as drive shafts are consurned there are shops out there that build and modify driveshafts.

Truck specs

The engine in it is a L6 300, and the 4-speed is coming out of a truck with the same engine, so I know it will bolt in, but I don't have the driveshaft so I don't know if that would work. What I need to know is the wheel base for the 80's long bed compaired to the 69', but I don't know where I can find those kind of specs.

Just knowing the wheelbases really isn't going to help you a whole lot. The engine/transmission would have to be located exactly the same way in relation to the rear-end for this method to work. Plus a lot of the 80's trucks used 8.8 rear-ends which use a flange type mounting system on the rear end. I'm not certain but I wouldn't be suprised if that would change the U-joint centerlines even if everything else was the same. The only way to make sure you have the right length is either to find someone who's done the swap and knows what it should be, or do the conversion and measure the u-joint centerlines.
