Problems with 4WD and driver's side door

Problem 1- When I switch to 4WD and try to make tight turns, the front feels like it's binding up and sometimes I hear terrible sounds like something's breaking. It doesn't happen all the time. I took it to the dealership and they couldn't find anything wrong.

Problem 2- The driver's side door hangs a little low and it's difficult to close. I couldn't find anything to adjust it. The inside handle thingie you pull the door closed with broke but I fixed it with epoxy.

If you are tight turning on dry pavement in 4WD this is what to expect. The front end should only be locked in when you are on road surfaces that allow slippage. Save the 4WD for snow, sand, and mud.

Thanks for the response. I expected something like that, but nothing nearly as bad as what I encountered. More importantly the grinding metal noise. Is this also normal?

Incidentally, I've never engaged 4WD on dry pavement. I had it on for about 200 miles driving up the Alcan, during a mixture of mud and loose gravel. I was towing about 1200 pounds. That's the closest to dry pavement I've ever turned the 4WD on.

Lastly I was wondering about engaging 4WD with studs on the back but not on the front. I was told not to do this but never ascertained why not.

Thanks again,

Steve

Have you checked your front u-joint, mine were almost dead, they had a lot of play in them. Since I've replaced them, no more clunk noise in tight turn and no more vibration on highway.

I just purchased a mint 91 explorer with 91k and within one hour after picking up the front end made a ggrrrinnnding ratcheting noise when turned sharply in either direction, It seems the elderly lady never engaged 4wd and the outer axel u-joints where frozen up stiff, lack of use and where causing front auto locking hubs to engage when sharp turns made, sounds like bad axel u-joints, Garry
