I have owned '91 and '93 Exploers and I have multiple problems especially with the slave cylinders, and clutch. I take my Exploers into the Ford shop at least 6 times a year. Time for a new manufacture for me. Any suggestions?
If you've read reliability ratings the 1995 -2000 explorers have the highest rating...the 1991-1994 were lower. Be careful what you buy..I'd DEFINATLY go with another ford!
personally I think the 91-94 Explorers rock and they are great trucks. I seen Them pushed to the limit and still run great... On the clutch system guess what!!! most clutch systems dont last past 80K they are not deside to last forever in any kind of car because of easy replacement easy for me any way... The last time I dropped the tranny was because of a bad slave and it took me 4 hour to replace and drive off... I have made it my mission to drive Explorers for the rest of my Years andI prefer the 91-94 over any other maybe that is why we have two in our garage...
My '93 has 262k on it and other than items that you'd expect to replace (tranny, water pump, radiator, a/c and the infamous radius arm bushings) this truck has rocked! I've driven it hard and pushed it way past what Ford designed it to do, it has taken me and my family places comfortably and safely, I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.
All fords are good cars and last long or at least longer than other cars not to name names but che__! Fill in the blank!
I am forced to agree with you. I have always had good luck with Fords. I will also only buy Fords. Yes, a Ford will last longer than a Che__ but both will last longer than a Dod__.
I have an '89 Bronco II that has almost 198K on the original motor. Still runs and drives great.
My wife has a '96 Explorer that we picked up last Nov. Excellent vehicle!
My nephew has a '92 Explorer with over 175K on it. All original. He loves it.
I have a '93 Caravan (I know I'm stupid) with 156K I bought July 2003. Replaced the motor 2 months later (not original 2.5 pulled from van and discovered not orig. tranny either). A month after that the tranny quit. It still sits in my back yard today.
So you see, most Ford owners I know have had wonderful experiences with them. Many non-Ford owners I know can't say the same.
In response to Chris, it might not be the Fords you need to complain about. It just might be the mechanics that have been doing the work to them. Try a different location next time for repairs and maybe you'll have better luck.

I also agree to your post about ford and che__ lasting longer than dod__. Ford is still the best but between che__ and Dod__ I would choose Che__.

I know what you mean. I tell my wife the same thing if Che__ and Dod__ were the only 2 choices.
I will say that I have heard people complain about Fords from time to time but you're going to get a few bad ones from time to time. But in some cases you have to wonder if it is that particular Ford or just the person's negligence with the upkeep of it.
Ford builds sturdy and long lasting vehicles. I feel more safe in a Ford than any other. My Bronco II was wrecked 9 months after I bought it used. I was rear-ended by an '86 Cavalier wagon at about 60 MPH when I was almost at a stop at a stop sign. There was $7200 in damage to my Bronco II and is still on the road today. The Cavalier ended up in the salvage yard. Need I say more?
I just sold my 1993 explorer after driving it for 11 years. Besides the usual maintanance, I had to get the tranny rebuilt, thats it for 11 years. If I had bought the extended warrany I would not have had to dole out the cash for it (my mistake). It has 270,000 Kms on it and I sold it to my brother who loves it and drives it to work every day. If you have a truck as reliable as that your going to buy another - my new truck is an 2003 explorer. It seems we only hear the bad and not much of the good.
If reliability is your number one concern, acording to Consumer Reports, Dodge and Chevy is not the way to go.
The Ford Explorer used to be one of the top of the reliability ratings for SUVs, but recently Toyota and Honda (and their upper end labels)have surpassed Ford on reliability in this class of vehicle. At least according to Consumer Reports.
